About the U.S. Congress

The United States Congress consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives and is the legislative branch of the Federal Government.

The Senate is made up of 2 Senators from each state and has a total of 100 members. Federal level Senators are elected for six-year terms. New Senators are elected or incumbent Senators re-elected every two years. There are three classes of Senators; this means that only one third of the Senate is involved in an election at one time.

A Senator must be a United States citizen for at least 9 years, be at least 30 years old and be a resident of the state from which they are elected.

The House of Representatives is made up of 435 Representatives. The population of each state determines the number of their Representatives. Representatives serve two-year terms. The entire House of Representatives is elected or re-elected every two years.

A Representative must be a United States citizen for at least 7 years, be at least 25 years old and reside in the state from which they are elected.
